Hello friends!
When I was at the Stockholm Comics Arts Festival last year I saw the Laurie Anderson exhibit and that got me thinking about conceptual art. If you’ve read the Plain Janes, you know that high concept art is something dear to my heart. I started thinking about how I could do something that was utterly comics and utterly human. I thought about what a unique comics anthology could look like. Something that was ephemeral and arty and playful and collaborative and lasted for a while. That was when the idea for I Am the Comic Book was born.
So starting mid May, launching at the Toronto Comics Arts Festival (TCAF) where I’ll be a guest, I’m going to spend the next year commissioning comics artists to do a three panel comic of a character named Maxi (designed by Mads Ellegard Skovbakke) walking in the world and make those comics into temporary tattoos that I wear on my arm as I walk through the world.
Meet Maxi.
It’s a murderer’s row of creators that are game to play with me in collaboration and artistic conversation: Mari Naomi,Diana Tamblyn, Scott Koblish, Pia Guerra, Nate Powell, Victoria Ying, Chris Wisnia, Sanya Anwar,Jose Pimienta, Nicole Goux,Hope Larson, Dan Santat, Sina Grace, Faith Erin Hicks, Jenny Soep, Allison Conway, Dean Haspiel, Thit Bitsch, Leuyen Pham, Alison Sampson, Rachael Smith, Thien Pham with a few more superstars to be announced!
I just launched a Kickstarter so that I can fund paying all the artists involved to give them a fair rate for their art. I hope that you will consider contributing to, supporting and spreading the word about this strange beautiful project I’ve cooked up!
thank you so much!
Cecil
