It’s already been a few weeks, but still, it’s a new year! So Happy new year to you all. It’s always good too look back and see what came out the year before, and I’m glad for the variety of stories I’ve gotten to tell!
Here in Los Angeles (and the west coast) it’s been a deluge of rain since the holidays. But at last, the sun has returned. Sometimes I believe that I am a flower, as I am in love with the sunlight here and so happy that we are moving towards longer days of light.
If you haven’t seen, SHIFTING EARTH was named in two best comics of 2022 end of year lists! Thank you to the CBC for name checking it as one of the best Canadian graphic novel of the 2022 and to Pop Culture Squad for saying this about SHIFTING EARTH and giving it such a stellar review.
This book is a triumph in comic narrative storytelling. The conflicts that the main characters face elucidate larger issues that require attention in the real world. The art, character development, scenery and overall story are all excellent in this book
In other upcoming news, my newest opera aria, TOUCHING THE SUN, a collaboration with composer Rose Hall is finally getting it’s premiere in Philadelphia on January 25th 2023! It was a commission from ENA Ensemble for their Serial Opera and Song Series on the theme “Celestial” and was originally scheduled to premiere this past September, but it got postponed due to Covid. The perils of still being in a pandemic. (I continue to wear my mask out and about!) If you live in the Philadelphia area and want to go, you can register here for the two performances.

The piece TOUCHING THE SUN is inspired by NASA’s Parker Solar Probe which is currently circling the sun and collecting data. The piece includes a triptych of illustrations of the probe by the amazing comic artist Pia Guerra. Let me know if you go and see the show! The other pieces in the Celestial program look to be amazing!
I am hoping that you are taking the new year by the horns and shaking off any of the blue of 2022. I’m hoping this year to write more, see more friends, go to more art things and of course travel.
I am very interested in doing more micro operas or aria songs, so I hope that I will do some more in the future. I am sure I will! Actually, I’m hoping that 2023 is the year that I write a bunch of short things, short stories, short plays as well as short operas! That’s my resolution. I think about how I have all these longer t
hings that I do and have on the burner, but they take such time to complete, but a few short things feels achievable. How about you? Do you have any creative resolutions for the new year?
Right now I’m trying to catch up on watching all the things that I haven’t watched yet last year, especially as awards season is coming up. I am a happy SAG and Film Independent member so this is my fave time of year! So many great things! This last week I watched Tár, Andor and The Bear which I loved. And my most recent read was Stephen Kings Carrie, which I’d never read and up next is the Kirby Bio by Tom Scioli. I am also currently obsessed with Stracciatella cheese, been throwing it on pasta with tomato sauce. What have you been watching or reading or eating that you love?
Anyway that’s what I’m up to. Let me know what you are up to!
Love, Cecil
